WorldCycle (2002-2003)
From Paris to Paris, diary of a one year travel around the globe.

Project.

Travelling is contagious. Tell someone you want to escape the routine of modern life and discover new cultures, horizons, people, landscapes, and live adventures you will remember all your life, I know a lot of people who would be ready to give up everything they have to do this. Are you tempted?

Cycling is not so contagious. Tell someone that your honourable hind structure will be crushed on a saddle for more than 1000 hours, I know a lot of people who would cherish the routine of modern life.

Well, you only live once, and we're about to fill a bottle of concentrated life juice that we will bring home and savour slowly, for many years.

Our idea therefore - which I believe you might have captured by now - is to travel round the world, on a bicycle. So what are the main goals of this trip?

Our idea is to travel round the world, on a bicycle.

What are the main goals of this trip?

A voyage of discovery

Landscapes, architecture, culture, gastronomy, language, music, people, and much more.

A personal challenge

A challenge in terms of sport, a challenge in terms of local risks, and simply in terms of facing the unknown. The idea of going round the planet, defying weather, terrain, disease, distance, hijack, theft, physical and orientation difficulties, cultural isolation and the smell of Sallie's feet - with one's brain and the strength of one's legs as the only engines to achieve this, the challenge comes across as too good to miss.

A voyage of human interaction

Learning to make compromises, working together, supporting each other through hard times, and especially, learning to thump your mate in the face with a broken pint if he's out of line.

A cycling challenge

Why not on buses, trains? Simply because it would be too easy. We wanted to make this project a sport-related challenge, a tough one. But not only had it to be attainable, it also had to be enjoyable. Which means that over the course of our trip, one third of which we have put aside for resting, visiting and travelling in transit, we plan to cover close to 20,000 kms, which averages at 70kms a day, for one year of our lives.

Sharing our adventures

Going round the world would not be half as fun if we kept it to ourselves. Many moments will remain untold, but many will definitely be worth telling.

Along the way, we will update our website, freshening up our diary and including new pictures.

The financial challenge

Another part of the challenge is that before a dream becomes reality you have to save money. And this often implies sitting in an office for a long time, gloomily staring through a computer screen. There are quicker ways, but I don't think my mother would ever let me become a porn star.
More seriously, this project cannot and will not see the day without external support.
